Being R.O.Y.A.L.S. in the classroom
“In order to educate a generation, we must know our true selves, we must be open to the community, we must love unconditionally and we must stand in the face of all obstacles. We must be R.O.Y.A.L.S.” –K.Johnson
I am in this work because I am in love with empowering students. My choice of empowerment comes in many forms but education is the primary vehicle that propels me. During my time in this work I have learned that in order to teach a student you must first care about that student and create a relationship with that student that allows you to push that student to his or her best self; this same concept can be applied to my role as a coach. I am charged with leading, cultivating, and mentoring new teachers through authentic relationships and collaborative partnerships to help them reach their full potential as educators. I will use my context as an educator from the community that I teach in as well as my experience in the corps to lead all of my CMs to become R.O.Y.A.L.S. in this work.
Being R.O.Y.A.L.S. in this work means understanding the importance of our commander’s intent, Relationships matter, embracing the Openness of different perspectives and seeking to understand others’ outlook, harnessing the “You factor” that each person brings to this work and leading from personal passions and strengths, contributing to Authentic dialogue about our work and what it takes to produce student progress, Loving the students for who they are, and maintaining a Savvy sense of realism in the classroom to produce dramatic student academic growth.
Corps members are working and collaborating on meaningful lessons for their students. They are engaging in dialogue around their identities and what shapes their viewpoint of the world. They are taking risks and failing beautifully then getting right up to try again. These corps members are enjoying their time together; they are laughing, joking, learning and supporting each other. They have built a community with one another that allows for authentic relationships and open dialogue centered on their place in this work and the impact they seek to make. They are educators, they are pushing towards a shared vision and they are proud of their participation in an already moving movement. They are being R.O.Y.A.L.S. in this work and that is my vision for my cohort..
My cohort will live out the ideal of being R.O.Y.A.L.S. in the classroom and take on the personal responsibility of motivating their students and producing exceptional student achievement progress because that is what it takes to truly make change. They will understand the importance of self-educating themselves and constantly looking for ways to create a safe space for their students and community atmosphere in their collabs. I hold high expectations for my cohort and I have the same expectations for myself. I want to push my own leadership and lead by example by exhibiting the characteristics of R.O.Y.A.L.S. as a coach. I will partner with my CMs and work alongside them in the spirit of service for our students. We will develop together as a cohort and internalize the academic achievement that can be possible for students if we bring our best selves to the classroom and truly embody the characteristics of R.O.Y.A.L.S.
